DDRCs :

About 90% of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) live in areas where no rehabilitation services h ave been provided and the biggest challenge is to reach these unreached PWDs. A new scheme DISTRICT DISABILITY REHABILITATION CENTRE FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES launched by the Hon'ble Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India in Jan/Feb. 2000 is a step towards providing rehabilitation services and implementation of PWD Act. 1995. The major objectives of these centres are :

	To provide comprehensive rehabilitation services to PWDs to enable them to become self-sufficient and productive.
	To act as disseminator of information relating to prevention of disabilities and strengthen society in controlling and preventing them.
	To facilitate convergence of schemes and programmes of various departments and mobilise/utilise local resources and expertise for development of PWDs.
	DDRCs will be a collaborative effort of State/District administration, implementing agency (National Institutes/ALMICO/DRC) and local NGOs/autonomous agency and facilitating agency.

Under this scheme DDDRC have to be opened in 107 districts. NIRTAR has been entrusted to open 10 DDRCs , two in Orissa (Koraput and Kalahandi districts) six in Madhya Pradesh and one each in Bihar and Chattisgarh.

NIRTAR established Composite Regional Centre (CRC) for persons with disabilities in 2001. It is located in the premises of Guwahati Medical Collge, Guwahati. An independent building is being constructed.

NIRTAR served as facilitator to establish Regional Spinal Injury Centre in the campus of SCB Medical College, Cuttack. Rehabilitation Services were commenced from 2000. Construction of a separate building for the centre is under progress. The following services are provided –
